You Think This Is Easy?

Voice quivering. Stomach fluttering. Palms sweating. And you think this is easy? The nerves took over prior to tonight's show. It's no different than performing in front of people. Sitting in an ice box with no one around. Privately secured away in a 8' by 8' safety net, and STILL, the nerves took over. For the listener, this is a good thing. It means I care. For me, it's just one step closer to that ulcer I've been dreaming about. Regardless, I wouldn't have it any other way. I love it!

Oh, and by the way, please take the time to hug your favorite comedian today. It takes a great deal of courage to make a crowd laugh. The passing of George Carlin is a sad one and he will surely be missed.

It's NOT easy, Ken!

I get nervous, too--even after having done a fair amount of radio as a kid, and a couple of years at that community FM where so many of us met. All my muscle memory around engineering a show was formed on giant old mixing boards with round knobs, and all sorts of automatic things that kept you from leaving monitors on...Rando's a little closer to the ground than that. Keeps it real, I guess, but yeah, I really relate!

There's nothing quite like the feeling of performing live, whether it is with people in front of you or people listing/looking at a re-constituted bunch of ones and zeroes.

My weak point- (and this has nearly nothing to do with performing)- after almost thirty years as a ham radio operator I have yet to make a radio contact with morse code. I've done voice modes (duhhh) and digital modes (i.e. hook a 2-way radio up with a computer and try to blow both up) but I have yet to do the original binary dot-dash (or dit-dah to the morse purist) thing. I fear flubbing a character or falling behind on copying (and 18 years ago I tested proficient at 13 words per minute).

In some quarters, I would not be considered a "real ham radio operator" because of this. All other things being equal, I think it is high time I face this one down and be done with it.

Thank you for the open window into Ken-Land. In the words of Radar O'Reilly, "we all have our bears to cross". Peace be with you.
